Taylor Fukunaga for Vice President for Division IV
Aloha everyone, my name is Taylor Fukunaga. I am currently a junior at Waipahu High School in the Academy of Industrial and Engineering Technology. I am a proud member of our school's PTK chapter, Beta Chi Omega. We are the first PTK chapter in the United States to be located at a high school campus. In addition, I am a part of my school's National Honor Society, Student Government council, Aloha Ambassador group, and SkillsUSA team. I've done martial arts for about 11 years, have been playing softball for 9 years, and have been dancing for about 4 years. I am a huge Disney fan and love going to my happy place: Disneyland. I hope to one day attend a college institution in the mainland and to become a civil rights lawyer.
In my campaign, “Let’s holomua together,” I emphasize moving forward together past many of the world’s current global issues, especially inequity. I come from Waipahu High School, where over 50% of the students come from low-income households and come from immigrant families. Thanks to the Waipahu High School Early College program, this led to the founding of the Beta Chi Omega chapter under Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society, the first collegiate chapter in the nation to be established at a high school. Early College and PTK membership have transformed Waipahu High School and its students by providing academic opportunities. Many of the high school students enrolled in our school’s Early College program are first-generation college students supporting their families financially. In 2018, Waipahu High School was honored to have ten high school graduates earn their college Associate’s Degrees while in high school. My goal is to share the benefits of Early College with other high schools as the first step towards becoming eligible for PTK membership. For high schools with established Early College programs, I plan to advertise PTK to those institutions. It would then increase PTK membership and help others gain knowledge of all that PTK has to offer.
